  1. Carbon dioxide is a CO2 colourless, and 
  2. odourless gas. It is slightly soluble in 
  3. water and denser than air. It is formed by 
  4. the complete oxidation of carbon. It is 
  5. produced by living things during the 
  6. processes of respiration and the decay of 
  7. organic matter, and plays a vital role in 
  8. the carbon cycle. Its increasing density 
  9. contributes to the greenhouse effect and 
  10. global warming. The gas supports the 
  11. combustion of burning magnesium, but 
  12. extinguishes lower-temperature flames; 
  13. it is used in fire extinguishers.
